PrideFest Plus One honors our next-generation LGBTQ leaders

The UWM LGBT Resource Center is this year’s PrideFest Plus One Campaign beneficiary, announced Wes Shaver, president of Milwaukee Pride’s Board of Directors, at the 2019 Annual Community Meeting on Monday, February 4.

All PrideFest Milwaukee visitors will be asked to add $1 — or any donation amount — at the online ticket site or festival box office.  This extra $1 will be donated directly to the UWM LGBT Resource Center.  To double the reach and impact of these community donations, Milwaukee Pride has pledged to match all dollars donated.

The UWM LGBT Resource Center is best known for hosting and producing the annual UWM Drag Show, which celebrated its 20th anniversary on Saturday, February 23 with 20 performers and nearly 2,000 attendees.  However, the center also supports an extensive range of programs, services, workshops and specialized support for LGBTQ students, and represents the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on a national level.   In September 2018, UWM was named among the nation’s top 30 most LGBTQ-friendly universities by the Campus Pride Index.

“We are thrilled to be receiving support & fostering intentional collaboration with the Milwaukee Pride community this year,” said Jennifer Murray, director of the UWM LGBT Resource Center. “The funds raised through the Plus One campaign will help us bring back our Pride Discovery Camp in 2020, so that we can continue to develop our community’s future LGBTQ leaders.”

Since 2013, the PrideFest Plus One Campaign has raised over $35,000 for critical community causes, including marriage equality, youth homelessness, sexual abuse support, gay-straight alliances and community health.  Last year, the campaign raised a record-breaking $12,200 — the largest annual total — to support Diverse & Resilient.   We welcome Plus One nominations throughout the year, and the Board of Directors makes the final selection and announcement at the Annual Community Meeting.

“Supporting the next generation of local LGBTQ leadership has been a long-time Milwaukee Pride goal,’ said Michail Takach, vice president of communications.  “We recognize that our community traditions, including PrideFest, are only sustainable with ongoing nonprofit leadership talent.  The UWM LGBT Resource Center, and its programs, celebrate sexual and gender diversity, cultivate leadership abilities, inspire individual heroism and motivate civic and community engagement.  By giving your dollars to PrideFest Plus One, you are investing in the future of LGBTQ Wisconsin.”

PrideFest Milwaukee returns June 6, 7, 8 and 9 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising.  Tickets will be on sale March 15 at www.pridefest.com.  Volunteers, vendors, entertainers and sponsors are encouraged to contact info@pridefest.com to get involved in this year’s festival.
