Sunday, June 10: Ako

Ako performs Sunday, June 10 on the Miller Lite Mainstage.

Ako is an indie-soul rock band from Milwaukee.  The band formed in 2016 when multi-instrumentalists Mark Soriano and Gabrielle Powell met through their college radio station and began to play in the basement of Soriano’s childhood home. They draw influence from all over the musical spectrum, especially R&B and 70s rock.

The band started playing bars and clubs in Milwaukee, and quickly grew their audience.  In 2017, Ako played PrideFest Milwaukee,  414 Live at 88.9 Radio Milwaukee, and an opening slot for Vinyl Theater.

Ako’s first album And You garnered attention from Milwaukee publication Breaking & Entering, saying it “sounds far beyond a debut project”. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel highlighted the “slightly stoned ease” of the album.

Ako is too complex to be confined by the limits of one genre. They appeal to Lauryn Hill fans with R&B beats, Girlpool fans with honest songwriting, and Fleetwood Mac fans with catchy guitar rock riffs. The band rides the waves between genres to create music to drive to, to run to, to move to.

No matter what background you have, you can rock with Ako.
