PrideFest honors A Day With(out) Art

VisualAIDS'DayWith(out)Art1989–201425th AnniversaryDecember 1 marks not only World AIDS Day, but the 25th anniversary of Day With(out) Art, a day of action and mourning first instigated in 1989 in response to the AIDS crisis.

Visual AIDS, the New York organization that founded the event, declared “…to make the public aware that AIDS can touch everyone, and inspire positive action, some 800 U.S. art and AIDS groups participated in the first Day Without Art, shutting down museums, sending staff to volunteer at AIDS services, or sponsoring special exhibitions of work about AIDS.”

To celebrate 25 years of positive action, Visual AIDS, working with filmmaker Tom Kalin, commissioned seven artist/collaboratives to make new videos.  Join PrideFest Milwaukee at ALTERNATE ENDINGS on Monday, December 1, at 7:00 p.m. at MIAD, in the Fourth Floor Screening Room. MIAD is located at 273 Erie Street, Milwaukee, WI 53202.

This event, co-hosted by the Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival and the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, is FREE and open to the public.  RSVP to the event now.

Featured artists include Rhys Ernst, Glen Fogel, Lyle Ashton Harris, Derek Jackson, Tom Kalin, My Barbarian, and Julie Tolentino. The program covers a vast array of topics, including  trans history; African American communities intellectual and queer; personal stories of romance ending; the disclosures of reality TV; and persisting arenas of loss. Working in a variety of modes — including slide shows, music video, library books (and other archives), and performance — these videos evoke such figures as Lou Sullivan, Pedro Zamora, Nan Goldin, José Esteban Muñoz, New Order, and Marlon Riggs.

Please join PrideFest Milwaukee in taking positive action on this day of reflection and remembrance!
